How to Turn a Spelling List into a Word Search
Paste in this week’s words, choose a fair difficulty and print the puzzle with its answer sheet. It takes a minute and works for more than homework.
Copying a spelling list three times is useful, but it is not exactly a crowd-pleaser. Hiding the same words in a puzzle gives children another reason to look closely at the letter order. It also makes a handy quiet task for the ten minutes before dinner.

Clean up the list first
Keep the words reasonably short and remove duplicates. Accents and punctuation are stripped when the puzzle is built, so “mother-in-law” becomes MOTHERINLAW and “Bär” becomes BAR. That is fine for a themed game, but a language lesson may need a different format if the accent itself is what the child is learning.
Choose a difficulty that tests the words, not eyesight
- Easy hides words across and down, always in the normal reading direction.
- Medium adds diagonals, which is a noticeable step up for younger children.
- Hard allows words backwards in every direction and suits confident puzzle solvers.
For a new spelling list, easy is usually enough. The child still has to recognize the whole word among unrelated letters. Save hard mode for familiar vocabulary or a party puzzle where the challenge is the point.
Let the grid size do its job
Automatic sizing is the quickest option. If one long word will not fit, choose a larger grid manually or remove it and write it as a bonus question below the puzzle. A grid with a little spare room is easier to print and kinder on tired eyes than one packed edge to edge.
Use names and themes too
A word search does not have to belong to school. Use guest names at a birthday party, animals for a zoo trip, foods for a picnic or places from an upcoming holiday. Children can also choose the words and hand the finished puzzle to an adult. That reversal is often much more fun than completing another worksheet chosen for them.
Make a small printable pack
